First Things: Vos and Foundational Doctrines

First Things: Foundational Doctrines: We begin in the beginning and that is with biblical theologically. We study, read and learn from theologians and books that lead us to truth in theology. One of the ways we can do this is to study the catechisms and then apply them practically. In The Westminster Larger Catechism, A Commentary, Johannes G. Vos, (and edited by G.I. Williamson), it sets forth foundational doctrines in an easy and understandable way that helps even a child or novice understand the teaching of Scripture. Thus, we thought this is a good place to start and periodically add to our commentary here. These will be “bite-sized” morsels to encourage you to dig into God’s Word and the catechisms, study them, mediate upon them and apply that knowledge in a practical way. We start in the beginning with Question 1 of “The Larger Catechism”:
Q. What is the chief and highest end of man?

A. Man’s chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy Him forever.

Scripture References:

* Rev. 4:11: All things were created for God’s pleasure.

* Rom. 11:36: All things exist for God

* 1 Cor. 10:31: It is our duty to glorify God in all we do.

* Ps. 73:24-28: God teaches us how to glorify Him, and that we shall enjoy Him in glory.

* John 17:21-24: Our supreme destiny is the enjoyment of God in glory.

Theology Girl Commentary:

Wonderful indeed are such glorious things to think upon and how rich a study this is! To read about our responsibility to and for our God and the enjoyment that it brings blessedly in this life and in the life to come. This God that is spoken of in the first question is your God, your Lord, your Savior, you King, your Husbandman, your life. He is your “all-in-all” both now and forever. We, as His children, love Him because He first loved us and gave Himself for us and that alone and in itself is the most important reason why we must seek His glory in all of life. How is it possible that we can glorify Him in daily life? By obeying Him, by exalting His person in His attributes, by submitting to His Word in act and deed, by using biblical discernment and by putting Him in our hearts and minds as our “first” priority of every moment and every decision of every day. In simple terms, it is loving Him in all that we do. It is, as the late Dr. James Boice wrote (and we so often quote) to “act and think biblically” in all things. It is putting “feet” on our profession of faith and thus we are blessed with joy unspeakable and true happiness which endures. Read and study and enjoy your God! __Theology Girl, jpn

“Thou has created us for Thyself, O God, and our heart is restless until it finds in repose in Thee.” __Augustine
